Physical Education Statement

Our Physical Education (P.E.) program supports students to acquire, refine and use a broad range of movement based skills, concepts and strategies. The students have opportunities to learn and demonstrate them across a range of activities and games. Participating in an effective PE program helps students to develop social, physical, social, psychological and cognitive skills that will serve them well throughout their schooling and into their adult years.
We aim for our students to become team players who are able to help and encourage others. Positive experiences at school support them to develop favourable attitudes to physical pursuits.
Students participate in weekly PE sessions taken by a specialist teacher. Our program is sequential, allowing students to improve their skills each year. It is inclusive and provides opportunities for all students to be active participants and show learning growth. It follows the Victorian P.E. Curriculum which is organised into three key areas: moving our bodies, making active choices and learning through movement.
We are lucky to have access to a range of equipment and a number of excellent facilities including an outdoor oval and multi-court and an indoor basketball stadium. We are also able to access local facilities such as the Neerim South Tennis Courts.
Connections with the local community and access to Sporting Schools Grants allows children to participate in a broader range of sporting activities, such as Judo, tennis or bike ed., to name a few.
Each year students in Years 3–6 have the opportunity to participate in District Athletics sports, our swimming carnival and cross country run. Our focus is on participation and enjoyment, with these events having the added bonus of giving students the possibility of winning through to zone and state levels in these events.

Art Statement

Exploring, developing practice, creating and presenting are the concepts that drive our Visual Arts program. Curiosity and engagement are motivating forces for learning, and we seek to engage our students and support them to raise their voice, agency and leadership skills. Our program is sequential. Skills, knowledge and the ability to express creativity are built from year to year.
We teach techniques in eight key discipline areas:

Through our ‘Student Voice, Student Choice’ units, children have the opportunity to return to topics or ideas that have interested them and plan and direct their learning, with the ongoing support of staff.
Through our ‘Student Voice, Student Choice’ units, children have the opportunity to return to topics or ideas that have interested them and plan and direct their learning, with the ongoing support of staff.
Each year students are introduced to an idea or concept, such as ‘Freedom’ or ‘Aiming High’, and make choices about how to represent the topic through their own work.
Children have opportunities to appreciate the work of their peers, other artists and indigenous and other cultures. They learn to display their own work and present it to a broader audience.
This year students will be documenting and reflecting on their own work in their personal art journals. Children carry their journals from one year to the next. When we have developed this practice further, students will take their journals home each term to share with their families and set goals for the following term.

Auslan Statement

At Neerim South Primary School our Auslan program supports students to develop communication skills, cultural awareness and an understanding of inclusive practices. Through learning Auslan, students build confidence in expressing themselves using signs, facial expressions and body language while also developing empathy and respect for the Deaf community and diverse ways of communicating.
Our program encourages students to become active and respectful communicators who are willing to support and include others. Learning Auslan helps students understand the importance of connection, belonging and accessibility within both the school and wider community.
Students participate in regular Auslan learning opportunities that are gradually being expanded across the school. We currently utilise the Auslan Education Services program and video resources to support our staff and students in learning signs and developing confidence in using Auslan. These resources provide consistent models of signs and help build staff capability as we continue to strengthen our practice over time.
Our program is guided by the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 Languages framework and supports students to communicate using signs, gestures and visual communication strategies while developing intercultural understanding and an appreciation of language diversity.
We believe Auslan is most effective when it is embedded across the school day rather than taught only in isolated weekly sessions. Our goal is to gradually incorporate Auslan into classroom routines, transitions, wellbeing practices and whole school interactions so students experience language learning in meaningful and authentic ways. Children currently participate in activities such as learning greetings, following visual instructions, engaging in songs and games and practising simple conversations. As our program continues to grow, we aim to further embed Auslan into everyday school life and strengthen inclusion, belonging and communication across our school community.
